HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU SUFFER FROM TRAUMA
Many people have suffered trauma and are not even aware of it
- It is not the objective facts of an event that determines if it caused trauma, but rather your subjective emotional response to the event. Which means, if you feel that it was traumatic, then it was.
- Trauma affects everyone in different ways but it can affect you physically, emotionally and behaviourally.
- Physically – you might experience changes in eating habits, feel tired all the time, sleep disturbances or even physical pain.
- Emotionally – you might feel hypersensitive, angry or irritated, negative, hopeless or even experience flashbacks.
- Behaviourally – you might want to avoid people or events, have no interest in activities that you usually enjoyed, experience relationship difficulties, wish to isolate yourself or even feel the need for excessive use of substances.

About Your Therapist
Riaan van Wyk
MSexologiae (Cum Laude), BSc (Hons-NDP) Therapeutic Psychology (Cum Laude), BEng (Hons)
I am an Integrated Psychotherapist, Traumatologist, Sexologist and Relationship Specialist. I am fortunate enough to co-own My Therapy International with my wife, Anna-Mart van Wyk, who practices a Holistic Therapist and a Neuro-Behavioural Coach.
It might surprise you that I started my career as an Engineer, as it was the “logical choice” in the era when I attended varsity, but my interest in human behaviour was relentless and I ended up reading twice as many books on Psychology as on Engineering while qualifying as an Engineer. After having practiced as a Metallurgical Engineer for a couple of years, I finally made the “right choice” and pursued my true passion – the Human Sciences.
My Engineering studies contributed greatly to me being the Therapist I am today as it caused me to be very critical of therapeutic interventions that lack the scientific credibility and proven track record to back them up. I therefore only use therapeutic models that are evidence-based and validated by science to ensure my patients get results.
I think differently to other Therapists and I integrate many models to ensure that my patients receive the optimal level of care to truly help them. I can’t help but be outcomes orientated and feel a huge sense of responsibility to make a real, tangible difference.
Although, I use many different intervention protocols, I have a special love and intimate knowledge of these therapies as they work –
- Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (Fosha)
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (Beck)
- Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (Ellis & Dryden)
- Rational Behaviour Therapy (Maultzby)
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (Pederson’s expansion on Linehan)
- Internal Family Systems Therapy (Schwartz)
As a result, the majority of interventions that I use are based on principles from the abovementioned therapies.
In all that we do, we only use reliable therapies and for that reason, our results are predictable.
We believe that patients should be in therapy for as short as possible and as long as is absolutely necessary and we do not want to make people dependant on therapy, but rather equip them with skills to thrive.
My wife and I are passionate about offering people a holistic solution to well-being – first heal and then excel and learn new skills to sustain the progress that you have made long-term.
Life is magical and the magic starts with hope. We believe that we are essentially Hope Merchants by trade; and we just happen to use Therapy to give people exactly that – HOPE.

About Your Therapist
Anna-Mart van Wyk
Clinical Hypnotherapist, Holistic Therapist and Neuro-Coach (DipNeuroC)
Anna-Mart van Wyk (DipCH, DipNeuroC) is a qualified, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Neuro-Behavioural Life Coach, registered with the prestigious ICC (International Coaching Council) and with the National Hypnotherapy Council in the UK. She has further qualifications in various therapeutic interventions, through the Surrey College of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy, accredited by the National Society of Psychotherapists and she has further qualified herself in the Neuroscience of Coaching, through the University of Pretoria.
Although, her primary modality is Hypnotherapy, she integrates various interventions to follow a holistic approach by using her qualifications in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing), EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), TLT (Timeline Therapy) and SFT (Solution Focussed Therapy).
She is passionate about seeing people thrive and reach their full potential. This becomes difficult if we are held captive by pain and trauma. “Our current selves are the products of our past, but every moment offers an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. The sad reality is that, due to the inhibiting, debilitating effects of trauma, many people are stuck in the versions of themselves from a decade or even longer ago. If we are unable to let go of our pain, then living the life of our ideal, best-selves becomes impossible.”
There has been increased evidence of how instrumental the body can be in helping the mind to heal with polyvagal theory, being just one area of focus. She makes use of various top down and bottom-up interventions to bring about lasting change for her clients and empowering them to improve their mental and emotional resilience.
She uses her more than 15 years of training and coaching experience, to not only help her clients heal, but understand how they function as a holistic system. Her love of psychoeducation ensures that her clients understand their triggers, behaviour, and their healing process on a cognitive level as well. This approach brings about lasting change.
“We have learnt that we relate to the world, not as it truly is, but as we are. It follows then that we can change our experience of the world, by working on being our best, most whole selves. Holistic therapy is all about helping you feel safe in your own body, build new neural pathways that serve you better and gain the confidence to pursue your dreams.”
